Preharvest forecasting of apple yield

Forecasting of preharvest apple yield is essential for timely management of preharvest and post harvest inputs and outputs. Apple yield is mainly affected by biometrical characters and weather parameters. In this book therefore, primary data were collected on the apple yield and biometrical characters of apple trees of five blocks of Kullu district of H.P. Maximum yield was observed in Nagar block & minimum in Banjar block during the study. Yield was found to be significantly and positively correlated with age, height, girth, diameter, canopy (N-S), canopy (E-W) and number of branches biometrical characters of apple tree. Whereas, forecasting model based on multiple regression analysis for Kullu district is Y=1.1272 + 0.9638X1 + 2.6485X2 + 3.5237X3 + 0.2138X4 + 0.4467X5 + 0.8395X6 + 1.3490X7 +1.0280X8 found to be fitted well based on R2, adjusted R2, SSE and RMSE in the data of biometrical characters of apple tree. The analysis concluded that tree age, tree height, girth, canopy spread, volume and number of branches are the important biometrical characters which effect apple yield. So, these characters are not to be neglected in an experiment dealing with apple yield forecasting.

The present investigation was carried out at experimental orchard, Division of Fruit Science, SKUAST-K, Shalimar. The experiment consisted of three treatments on three cultivars of apple (Lal Ambri, Firdous and Sunhari) replicated thrice in RBD. The results revealed that foliar application of nutrients had a significant effect on growth parameters, foliar nutrient contents, physical & chemical characters, yield and quality of apple cultivars. The combined application of Ca, Mg and micro-nutrients resulted in better annual shoot growth, leaf fruit ratio, leaf area and number of leaves per shoot when compared with control and other treatments, without affecting uptake of N, P and K. Further, the leaf Ca, Mg, Zn, Mn and B uptake improved with the combined application of Ca, Mg & micro-nutrients when compared with control and other treatments.The studies revealed that the foliar application of nutrients improved the overall performance of apple cultivars with respect to qualitative and quantitative characters. Hence the combined foliar application of macronutrients and micro-nutrients along with soil application of N,P and K is recommended for the better performance of apple cultivars.

Per hectare yield of various fruits especially apple is very low in Pakistan. The low yield attributed to non-adoption of recommended horticultural practices by the apple growers. EFS are mainly responsible for the dissemination of recommended horticultural practices by using different communication methods This, in turn, relate to the communication interventions of EFS with the growers. Lack of effective communication between the EFS and apple growers seems to be one of the main causes of low per hectare yield of apple fruit in the province. The present work had been planned to analyze communication interventions of EFS with apple growers to explore the reasons for non-adoption of recommended horticultural practices by the growers. There existed highly significant positive relationship of farmers participation with awareness, adoption and information exposure. Size of land holding showed highly significant and positive relationship with farmers participation in extension activities while size of apple orchard reflected significant negative relationship with adoption. the study findings would be helpful for the researcher and EFS to make their communication more effective.
